A DWELLING PLACE FOR GOD

Believers in Jesus are indwelt by the Holy Spirit. God Himself lives within us. All believers everywhere are individual members of a grand dwelling of God—the church! God continues to build up this dwelling.

READ: Ephesians 2:22

READ: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

We are a dwelling place for God. A place for Him to display His glory. The idea that God lives inside of us should radically impact how we live. How should we use our body knowing that it is a temple of the Holy Spirit?

WRONG THINKING: It doesn’t matter how I live.

RIGHT THINKING: God dwells within me. I should use my body to glorify Him.

A HOLY TEMPLE (UNITED WITH OTHER BELIEVERS)

In the Old Testament, the temple was the building where the presence of God dwelt. In the New Testament, God’s people are both individually and corporately His temple.

READ: Ephesians 2:19-21

READ: 1 Corinthians 3:1-17

Paul warns us about how we treat the church because it is the dwelling place of God (1 Corinthians 3:16-17). Are you building up the church or tearing it down?

WRONG THINKING: The church is really not all that important.

RIGHT THINKING: I should work to build up the church! It is the temple of God.

A MEMBER OF GOD’S HOUSEHOLD

Believers in Christ are counted among the family of God and are members of His household.

READ: Ephesians 2:19

READ: 1 Timothy 3:14-15

Families can be challenging. Our earthly parents are unable to be perfect, but God is a perfect Father. He is loving and wise and trustworthy in every way. How can the reality that you are a part of God’s family change the way you think and go about your day?

WRONG THINKING: I don’t really belong anywhere. I am the black sheep of the family.

RIGHT THINKING: God has accepted me into his family as His beloved child. Therefore, He wants me to imitate Him (Ephesians 5:1).

A FELLOW CITIZEN WITH THE SAINTS

Believers in Christ are counted among the people of God and are citizens of heaven.

READ: Ephesians 2:19

READ: Philippians 3:17-21

True belonging! Never again on the outside! We are citizens of heaven for eternity. What are some of the benefits of being a citizen of the United States? What are some of the many blessings of being a citizen of heaven?

WRONG THINKING: My earthly citizenship is all that matters.

RIGHT THINKING: I have a heavenly citizenship that is far more important than any earthly ties.

GIVEN ACCESS TO THE FATHER

In Christ, we are able to approach God and have relationship with Him.

READ: Ephesians 2:18

READ: Romans 5:1-2 and Ephesians 3:8-12

God has not kept us at arm’s length. He is as close to us as His Spirit who dwells within us. God our Father has made a way where there was no way. He opened the door and stands with open arms. Do you come into the presence of the Lord? What are some things that might keep you from spending time with Him?

WRONG THINKING: I cannot share my problems with God. He is distant and doesn’t care.

RIGHT THINKING: God is close, and I have access to Him! His Spirit lives in me, and I can come to Him with all of my needs.

RECONCILED TO GOD

To be brought into friendship with God.

READ: Ephesians 2:16-17

READ: 2 Corinthians 5:18-21

There is no longer enmity between us and God and other believers because of sin. In Christ, we are reconciled to God and to one another, but sometimes we go back to thoughts that treat God like an enemy. What are some things in your life that might trigger negative thoughts about God? What should you do about them?

WRONG THINKING: God is my enemy. He is against me. He has rejected me.

RIGHT THINKING: In Christ, I have been reconciled to God. God counts me His friend. Now I must live out that reconciliation in word and deed.

MADE PART OF ONE NEW MAN

Jews and Gentiles were once separated. But now as the Jew and the Gentile both approach God through Jesus Christ, there is unity between them.

READ: Ephesians 2:14-15

READ: Romans 3:29-30 and Romans 15:1-12

Being united in the body of Christ means that old hostilities due to different backgrounds must be laid aside. We are one in Christ; He is our peace. In Christ, how can you walk in unity with all believers? What are some ways you can reach out to another believer of a different background to express the unity we have in Christ?

WRONG THINKING: It’s us verses them.

RIGHT THINKING: Christ has torn down the walls between people of different backgrounds. This person who is different from me is my brother in Christ.

BROUGHT NEAR BY THE BLOOD OF CHRIST

We all were separated from God because of our sin. But through the death of Jesus we have been brought into a close, intimate relationship with Him.

READ: Ephesians 2:13

READ: Psalm 145:18-21 and Psalm 148:13-14

God has brought you near. The wall has been torn down and the curtain torn in two. Will you now draw near in faith? Is God your closest friend? What are some things that you can do to foster greater intimacy with the Lord?

WRONG THINKING: I am far away from the Lord.

RIGHT THINKING: In Christ, I have been brought near to God.

NO LONGER A STRANGER TO THE COVENANTS OF PROMISE

In redemptive history, God made covenants with His people. A covenant is a relationship involving promises confirmed by oath (cf. O. Palmer Robertson).

READ: Ephesians 2:11-12

READ: Genesis 15 and Hebrews 6:17-18

In Christ we now can lay claim to the promises of God. Make a mental list of some promises from the Bible that speak to your heart. In Christ, these are yours. A favorite of mine is Isaiah 41:10.

WRONG THINKING: My relationship with God is not as important as some of my other relationships—my marriage, my children, my friends.

RIGHT THINKING: I am in covenant relationship with God—the deepest and most important kind of relationship there is. In this covenant relationship, God has made me promises that I can trust.

GOD’S WORKMANSHIP, CREATED IN CHRIST JESUS

In Christ, God has given believers new spiritual life and re-created them after the ruin of the fall of man.

READ: Ephesians 2:10

READ: 2 Corinthians 5:14-21

Each of us has been created for an eternal purpose. How then shall we live? Upon what does God want you to build your life? What does God want you to do to live out the new creation that you already are in Christ?

WRONG THINKING: My old habits and who I was before I became a Christian are too strong for me. I will never break free from being that person.

RIGHT THINKING: In Christ, God has re-created me! I have a new nature that God enables to obey Him.

SAVED

To be delivered. God saved us by His grace through faith in Jesus. When a person places their faith in Jesus, the Bible says they are justified—they are declared righteous in God’s sight.

READ: Ephesians 2:8-9

READ: Romans 3:9-28

No matter how hard, how dark, how difficult things may seem at times, we can always remind ourselves that we have been saved! Saved from sin and death and eternal torment. God did what we could and would not do. Thanks be to God! Now, even after we come to Christ, it can be tempting to rely on our works. What are some areas in your life that you tend to fall back into depending on your performance rather than the work of Jesus on your behalf?

WRONG THINKING: God will accept me if I am good enough.

RIGHT THINKING: There is nothing that I can do to earn my salvation. It is a gift of God’s grace granted simply through trusting Him.

SEATED WITH CHRIST

Because of a believer’s union with Christ, God counts what happened to Christ in His death, burial, resurrection, and ascension as having happened to the believer as well. Therefore, just as Jesus is now seated in glory, so is the believer.

READ: Ephesians 2:4-7

READ: Colossians 3:1-4

Jesus died. We died. Jesus rose. We rose. Jesus is seated in glory. Therefore, so are we! We are to set our minds on heavenly things—where Christ is—rather than earthly things. What are some earthly things that vie for your attention? Name them specifically. How can you set your mind more on things above? Remember Hebrews 12:1-3. Christ is risen! We have been raised with Him! Alleluia!

WRONG THINKING: The things of this earth are all that really matters. I must think about and pursue them.

RIGHT THINKING: Since Christ is seated above, and God counts me as seated there with Him, my mind should be on my heavenly home.

MADE ALIVE WITH CHRIST

Because of a believer’s union with Christ, God counts what happened to Christ in His death, burial, resurrection, and ascension as having happened to the believer as well.

READ: Ephesians 2:4-5

READ: Romans 6:1-11

Who we were outside of Christ is dead and gone, so we should live out our new identity in Christ in obedience to God. We are alive! Alleluia! The old dead things need to go. What alive things now need to be brought to life? How can your thought life change? What else needs to change in your life to bring it more in line with your new life in Christ?

WRONG THINKING: Since I have new life in Christ, I can do whatever I want with it.

RIGHT THINKING: Having been raised with Jesus, I must now live my life like I am truly alive in Christ.

A MEMBER OF CHRIST’S BODY

The body of Christ is made up of believers in Christ. There is a spiritual oneness that believers share with Jesus. Since believers are in union with Christ, they are also united to one another.

READ: Ephesians 1:22-23

READ: 1 Corinthians 12:12-27

We are to live out our unity in Christ through fellowship with other believers and serving in the body of Christ. Pray this quietly in your soul: “Thank you, Lord Jesus, that I am a part of something, Someone, far greater than myself. Thank you that I am in you and a part of the body of Christ. To you be all the glory!” What are some areas where you need to maintain unity with a fellow believer? What steps can you
take to this end?

WRONG THINKING: Life is a solo. I do my best on my own. I don’t bother anyone else and no one else bothers me.

RIGHT THINKING: As part of the body of Christ, I have a role to play. I need to fulfill my role and be concerned about the other members of the body.
